The Honor of All: The Art and Wisdom of Swil Kanim
At a recent Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club meeting, we recognized a couple of “students of the month,” and we were all impressed with not only their academic achievements, but even more so with their community involvement and their belief in the importance of service in their lives. In response, Swil Kanim honored our young award recipients with music, and prefaced his pieces with stories of a wise uncle and the healing mysteries of nature that with Swil Kanim’s permission I’m honored to share. Enjoy the beauty of his words as well as his violin.

Signs of the Times
Next month I’ll be observing my 75th orbit around the sun. Having reached the three-quarters of a century mark, I’ve been a bonafide witness to the truth of the adage “What is old becomes new again.” While I certainly can’t apply that bit of folk wisdom to myself (75 years is, after all, 75 years), it’s an observation that rings true for the signage that Meyer Sign recently created for Mount Vernon’s venerable green space, Hillcrest Park. Allow me to explain.

A Bite of Skagit: In the Heart of A-Town There’s a Turkish Delight
I vividly recall my first encounter with Turkish coffee. It wasn’t in Turkey, but in Athens, Greece. I ordered a coffee at a street cafe, expecting the usual steaming hot mug of percolated joe that I’d come to know and love in the good ole USofA. Instead, to my astonishment, I was served a demitasse cup that looked straight out of my kid sister’s make believe tea set, filled with an aromatic brown sludge. That first sip forever changed my perception of coffee, and after my initial shock wore off, I discovered that I really liked it. I still do. Which is way I was so delighted to discover the existence of the Corner Caffé in Anacortes.

They Called the Town Equality
Over the six years and counting that Meyer Sign has been bringing you its Tales of the Magic Skagit stories, we've shared a number of historical accounts -- spanning a period from "time immemorial" to the 20th century. Our hands down obsession, however, has been with a late 19th century utopian community that once existed in the Bow/Blanchard area off today's Chuckanut Road. "They Called the Town Equality" is a multi-episode history of the community known as Equality Colony, with stories and podcast interviews featuring Sayer Theiss, Melissa Stowe, and Robert Burns. We've put them all together in one handy dandy place, so settle in and steep yourself in one of the Magic Skagit's most interesting bits of history.

A Bite of Skagit: Mangonada is a Mouthful of Cinco de Mayo
I will never forget my first mangonada. It was at the Skagit County Fair three years ago. I’d seen Hispanic families walking around with these amazing looking “smoothies,” and I was pretty sure were made with mango. I’ll admit that the mango spears sticking up from the colorful melange were something of a giveaway as to main ingredient. Looking over the menu at a Mexican snack food stand one afternoon, I was able to identify the mystery mango smoothie as a mangonada, and I promptly ordered one. It proved to be a life changing experience.

In Praise of “Tulipomania”: A Tales of the Magic Skagit Tribute to Our Annual Bacchanalia of Blooms
April 1 in the Year of Our Lord 2025 marks the 42nd annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival — the spring celebration of the agricultural product among so many that single-bloomingly put a pin in the Magic Skagit on the world map of seasonal celebrations — one that if not as well known as the Cherry Blossom Festival in our nation’s capitol attracts no less passionate a throng of admirers, domestic and international. How big a throng, you might ask? Last year the Magic Skagit’s tulip fields attracted 600,000 tourists who contributed an estimated $83 million in revenue in 2024. This is our Meyer Sign tribute to the Magic Skagit's iconic bloom.

A Bite of Skagit: Martini Brunch
Martini Brunch lays claim to a unique culinary genre in the Skagit Valley’s restaurant scene: an “adults-only” party breakfast and lunch venue. Located on 2nd Street, just a few blocks south of Mount Vernon’s downtown core, the bill of fare includes scrumptious eggs Benedicts, buttermilk biscuits and gravy, a “not-so-classic” breakfast plate with spicy pulled pork and giardinera (pickled vegetables), and many more brunch plates that put an entirely new spin on the concept of “scratch cooking.”

The Legacy of Wick Peth: A Pioneer of Rodeo Bullfighting in Skagit County
The rich history of rodeo in Skagit County is deeply intertwined with the life of Wick Peth, renowned as "the original rodeo bullfighter." Born on April 15, 1930 in Mount Vernon, Washington, Wick grew up in a family of homesteaders and ranchers. The Peth family had a significant influence on the settlement and development of the Skagit Valley. John Peth Sr., Wick's great-grandfather, left Wisconsin in the mid-1870s for Washington Territory, laying the groundwork for a storied family legacy.
